What do you want from your glass of wine? Drinking wine should be fun, interesting and above all be enjoyed with people ( and food ) you love. Above all choosing wine whether your budget is £8 or £80 should NOT be pretentious, scary or difficult, it’s your well earned leisure time after all!
If I ask you what sort of white wine you like, might you say ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ or would you say ‘Chablis’? If I asked about red might you say ‘Merlot’ or would you say ‘Rioja’? There’s no right or wrong answer, but if you describe your favourite wine by its varietal ( grape) name ( i.e. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot) did you know that there will be huge variations in what that fermented grape juice tastes like depending on many factors including the climate, soil, weather, country, the location of the vineyard.
Not to mention the skill and equipment that the winemaker employs, right from the time they grow and harvest the grapes all the way through the production process.
When you’re in a restaurant do you ever tend to fall back on a wine you know you’re going to like, but when it’s poured you find it rather uninspiring, and as you’re eating your meal the wine and the food together somehow doesn’t quite work. But you can’t put your finger on why?
Maybe you’d just like to try something different but don’t know where to start, or you’ve got an event where you’d like to serve wine that makes the food sing and your guests happy.
Or, finally, do you have a commercial establishment where your wine list is a little ‘tired’ or your customers can’t be persuaded to trade up? Or your cellar lacks organisation and you have wines that just don’t budge?
